Bihar had been a centre of learning and home to ancient universities like Nalanda and Vikramshila

Bihar saw a revival of its education system during the later part of the British rule when Patna University was established in 1917 which is the seventh oldest university of the Indian subcontinent. The current state of education and research is not satisfactory.

The universities of Bihar include: Patna University, Aryabhatta Knowledge University, Magadh University, B. R. Ambedkar Bihar University, Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University, Lalit Narayan Mithila University, Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University, Maulana Mazharul Haque Arabic and Persian University, Jaiprakash University, Bhupendra Narayan Mandal University, Veer Kunwar Singh University, New Nalanda Vihar, Nalanda Open University, Rajendra Agricultural University, Chanakya National Law University, Central University of Bihar, Nalanda International University, Aligarh Muslim University, Bihar Agricultural University, Sabaur and World class Innovation University. Some of them have been described below:

Patna University: Patna University is the first university in Bihar that was established in 1917 during the British Raj, and is the seventh oldest university of the Indian subcontinent.

Magadh University is a university in Bihar that is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The university is now governed by Bihar State University Act 1976.

B.R.Ambedkar University is a public university located in the north prime of Bihar. It was established in 1960; this university has 37 constituent colleges. Distance education courses are also offered.

The Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University, also known as Bhagalpur University, is a public university in Bhagalpur. The school is named after famous freedom fighter Tilka Manjhi. The university was established on 12 July 1960.

The Lalit Narayan Mithila University (LNMU) was started in 1972. The university is in Darbhanga disstrict.

Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University (KSDSU) is a state university located at Darbhanga. It is dedicated to the teaching end promotion of Sanskrit.

Jai Prakash University (JPV) is a public university in Chapra. It was established by the Government of Bihar in response to the needs of the people of Saran commissionary. It is named after freedom fighter Loknayak Jaya Prakash Narayan.

Bhupendra Narayan Mandal University is situated at the district headquarter, Madhepura District. It is a regional university famous for its quality teaching across the state.

Veer Kunwar Singh University (VKSU), named after the well known national hero and legendary freedom fighter Veer Kunwar Singh, is a public university in the city of Arrah. It was established by the Bihar University Act 1976.
