St. XavierSt. Xavier`s College is named after a Jesuit saint of 16th century St. Francis Xavier. This college is affiliated to the University of Calcutta. St Xavier`s College is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious institutions of India.

Location of St. Xavier`s College
St. Xavier`s College started in the year 1860 in the discarded San Souci Theatre on Park St. by the Belgian Jesuits. The team of the Jesuits was headed by Dr. Robert St. Leger. The College is located at 30, Park Street, Calcutta-700016.

History of St. Xavier`s College
In the year 1834, the College was opened at Moorghyhatta by Fr. Chadwick, an English Jesuit. The present imposing five storied building was built in an interval of 6 years, from 1934 to 1940 at the cost of Rs. Nine lakhs. The money was collected partially from the public of Calcutta, aid from Belgium and the huge rental received from the American army that occupied the building during the Second World War.

The St. Xavier`s College started as a pure arts college, and then gradually science teaching was also introduced. In the year 1862, the University was affiliated to University of Calcutta. B.Ed education started at 1940s. B.Com commenced in 1946. In the year 1976, the College was opened to girls in all departments except B.Com. A computer centre was inaugurated in 1985, EMRC (Educational Media Research Centre) in 1988, which was accredited to DOEAC to conduct the courses and was accredited to IGNOU. In the year 1977, HS courses were started which again phased out from 2001. In the year 1985 SXCCAA was founded.

Courses offered by St. Xavier`s College
The various courses offered by St. Xavier`s College are B.A, B.Sc, B.Com. The B.Sc course includes Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, and Computer Science while the B.A. course comprises departments like Bengali, English, Sanskrit, Persian, History, Philosophy, Polscience, Sociology, and Film Studies. The college also provides BBA honours. Another major program is Mass Communication and Video Production. The post graduation courses are M.Sc in Computer Science, and M.Sc in Physics.

Facilities of St. Xavier`s College
Many facilities are offered by this college. The classrooms are large and spacious. There are laboratories, audiovisual room, auditorium, library, reading room, canteen, hostel etc. St Xavier`s College Computer Centre is very well affiliated, which introduced computer training as various courses in computer studies. St. Xavier`s College Computer Centre (SXCC) was inaugurated on 4th November 1985 on the occasion of the 125th Anniversary of the college. It is a non-profit academic institution, which has always concern for the under-privileged sections of the society. Fees concession is provided to the poor students.

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is attached to St. Xavier`s College, which offers many courses.
