The Sivananda Ashram is located at Sivanandanagar, in Tehri District of Garhwal, Uttarakhand. The place is also known as Sivanandanagar, situated under the tehri-Garhwal district of the state of the Uttaranchal. Sivananda ashram is located just three kilometres away from Rishikesh.
History of Sivananda Ashram
The Sivananda Ashram was established by Swami Sivananda in the year 1932. Initially the ashram was an abandoned cowshed. Swami Sivanadaji used to call it Ananda kutir or the `Abode of Bliss`. Soon the disciples started gathering near Ananda kutir and turned the place to an ashram.
Activities of Sivananda Ashram
Swami Sivananda founded the Divine Life Society in the Sivanada Ashram four years after its foundation. After that in the year 1938, a journal named `The Divine Life` started to publish from the ashram. `Serve, Love, Give, Purify, Meditate, Realise` was the motto of Sivananda society that bought its uniqueness. Sri Viswanath Mandir was consecrated in the year 1943. Swami Sivananda used to treat the patients that included poor localities, pilgrims and passing monks regularly. Later, the Sivananda Ayurvedic Pharmacy was established in the year 1945.The pharmacy use rare Himalayan herbs in the medicinal preparation.
Swami Sivananda was one of the most famous Yoga -Gurus of the world. He founded `Yoga Vedanta Forest Academy` in the year 1948 to guide his disciples and followers. The number of his followers significantly increased to learn the process of Yoga. The academy established its own Press in the year 1951. The Sivananda Eye Hospital was founded in 1957, six years before the passing of the great visionary doctor, Swami Sivananda.

The Ashram can be connected via air and rail route. The nearest airport to the Ashram is Jolly Grant at Dehradun at a distance of 40 kilometres. Rishikesh is very nearby, which has very good rail-root connections to all parts of the country.
