Milan Luthria is a prominent Bollywood film director who is credited for the successful films like Once Upon a Time in Mumbai and The Dirty Picture. He is the son of celebrated Indian director and producer Raj Khosla. Beginning his career as an assistant director he turned to film direction and made some of the most successful films of Bollywood. Some of his directional ventures have also been honoured with prestigious film awards.
Career of Milan Luthria
Milan Luthria began his film career in the year 1993 as an assistant director for Dharmesh Darshan`s film Lootere. He debuted as a director in 1999 with the action thriller film Kachche Dhaage starring Ajay Devgan and Saif Ali Khan. Shot in Rajasthan and Switzerland, the film received mixed reviews. In the year 2002 he once again collaborated with Devgan and directed the film Chori Chori, also featuring Rani Mukherjee and Sonali Bendre. Although the movie received mixed reviews, some of the sequences were marked as excellent. The film has an interesting storyline but the script went flawed and sluggish. In the year 2004 Milan Luthria came up with a war drama titled Deewaar whose script was written by Anurag Kashyap. The movie had Bollywood actors Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt and Akshaye Khanna and a backdrop of Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. Although the film was not much appreciated by the critics, it became a commercial success. It went on to the first position in the Indian film charts in the week of release.
In February 2006 Milan Luthria directed Taxi Number 9211 under the production of Ramesh Sippy. One of the soundtracks for the film was composed by the new age music director duo Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani. Shot in 2005, the film was a comedy thriller starring John Abraham and Nana Patekar.The movie became a huge critical as well as commercial success and became the 16th highest grossing film in India in the year 2006. The originality and unpredictability of the film was much praised. Cricket comedy flick Hattrick was his next venture starring Paresh Rawal, Danny Denzongpa, Nana Patekar, Kunal Kapoor and Rimi Sen. His 2010 film Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai under the production of Balaji Telefilms and Popcorn Entertainment received great appreciations from critics and was marked as super-hit by the box office.
In 2011 Milan Luthria released The Dirty Picture featuring Vidya Balan, Emraan Hashmi, Naseeruddin Shah and Tusshar Kapoor which was loosely based on the real life story of the late Southern actress Silk Smitha. The film was successful both critically as well as commercially. Subsequently he directed the sequel of one of his previous film titled Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai Dobara.

Milan Luthria won Screen Award for Best Director in 2012 for the movie The Dirty Picture. In the same year he also received Lions Gold Awards for Favorite Movie Director and The Global Indian Film and TV Honours for Best Director (Jury) for the same film.
