Lingana Fort, Monument of MaharashtraLingana Fort is located on a monolithic pinnacle on the Sahyadris Mountain Range between Torna and Raigad. It was built at a height of 2969 feet and the top of the fortification is 2500 feet square. The fortress was established by ChatrapatiShivaji , Maharaj the founder of the Maratha Empire, in 1648. It was built to provide protection to central Konkan against the forces of the Siddis. During the reign of the Maratha rulers, the fort at Lingana was utilised as a prison or penal settlement. The prisoners were held in rock dungeons and each with one dungeon contained almost 50 prisoners.

Later in the year 1818, the structure was occupied by the army of the British East India Company under the leadership of Colonel Prother after they defeated the Maratha forces. The rock cut steps of the Lingana Fort have become completely damaged and thus the fortress is almost inaccessible. There are no ruins of any fortification or old buildings inside the premise of the fortress. However, the ruins of some water reservoirs and a store house is still present.
