Filmfare Award for Best Lyricist is awarded by Filmfare in its annually held Filmfare Awards. This nomination category was introduced in the year 1959, five years after the inception of Filmfare Awards, to honour the respectable and creative lyricists of Indian Cinema for penning down the wordings of Hindi film songs. It is presented to the lyricist who has written the most touching lyrics to a preceding year"s Hindi film song as per its theme, beautifully emoting out its feel.
Prominent Records in Filmfare Award for Best Lyricist
Eminent lyricist Gulzar holds the maximum number of Filmfare Awards for Best Lyricist, with 11, followed by Javed Akhtar with 8 wins and Anand Bakshi with 4 wins. Javed Akhtar holds the record of most nominations in a single year with 5 in the year 2005 when he was the single nominee eventually winning for "Tere Liye" song from the film "Veer-Zaara". Anand Bakshi holds the record of most number of total nominations, with 40 of those in a span of 35 years, out of which, 23 were consecutively in 13 years from 1970 to 1982.
Lyricists Shakeel Badayuni, Shailendra, Sameer and Prasoon Joshi have won the award thrice, with Badayuni having won for 3 consecutive years from 1961 to 1963 and holding the record for most consecutive wins. Mehboob with 4 nominations has the maximum nominations without ever winning. Rashmi Singh is the first woman to win the Filmfare Award for Best Lyricist in 2015.
