The Indian movie, `Dus Kahaniyan` is produced by Sanjay Gupta that comprises of ten different short stories. Each story portrays coincidence, contrived circumstance or a twist in the tale. And the best part is that every short film has been shot and presented realistically, lending a strong credibility to each tale.
Dus Kahaniyan is a film made around ten small stories of approximate 10-12 minute length and has assembled a huge Bollywood cast. The movie deals with a myriad of human emotions, from love to hate to joy. Every story is unique and do not have any kind of link with the other stories. Six different directors have directed these small films and for every story there are different set of actors. This film was promoted as watching ten movies on the cost of one movie. Synopsis of `Dus Kahaniyan`
Dus Kahaniyan, the Indian movie is comprised of ten short stories. The ten different stories with their diverse mood and varied theme weave the magic of the movie "Dus Kahaniyan" while making it a lot different from the traditional Bollywood flicks. The stories are given according to the chronology in the movie `Dus Kahaniyan`.
Matrimony
This movie is directed by Sanjay Gupta. The story goes like that Mandira played by Mandira Bedi is a bored wife of an multi national company Vice President played by Arbaaz khan. Mandira has an extramarital affair. Her boyfriend is an army officer played by Sudhanshu Pandey. They are a good pair and mix well. Every Thursday they meet with each other and spend some good time together. At home she always presents herself as a dutiful wife. But she also played the role of a girlfriend to her boyfriend. Mandira thinks that her love for her boyfriend is not just to fulfill her sexual desire. Comfort and friendship fills a great part in it. As it turns out, Sudhanshu Pandey has to report to his post. He eventually gifts her beautiful diamond necklace.
She likes the necklace very much but hesitant to take it to home. Her lover insists her to use it as he has bought it with great affection and love. She thinks a plan. She goes to a jeweler and hands over the necklace to the jeweler. Her plan is like that she tells the jeweller that she be given a coupon, which under the pretext of a lucky draw or so. This would be produced and she be given back her necklace. She goes home and tells her husband about the incident. The next morning, her husband goes to collect the award or prize. He calls her from his office and tells her that the gift is with him and she can collect it. Mandira is very exited and come to the office to see her gift. She goes with great eagerness. But after opening the box she becomes strange as she finds only a small diamond ring. She comes out of her husband`s cabin and tries to call the jeweler. She gets the feel that the jeweler has done some mistake. But because of network problem she doesn`t get the line. So she turns to Arbaaz`s secretary and asks her to connect to the number of the jewelery shop. First she does not look at her but as soon as she looks at the secretary she gets a shock. She sees the same necklace on the secretary`s neck. Mandira says the secretary that her necklace is beautiful. The secretary smiles at her and tells that it`s a gift from her boyfriend.
High on the Highway
This one is directed by Hansel Mehta. The synopsis of the story is two college students played by Jimmy Shergill and Masumeh Makhija. They are in love with each other. They have a strange habit of getting high. They talk, laugh, fight and often walk along the highway. One such night they are walking in a street. The time was after their graduation. Just at that time a bunch of goons try to kidnap Masumeh. Jimmy fights with the kidnappers but unfortunately succeed in their mission. Masumeh gets helped by the cops but Jimmy gets depressed by not saving her. He becomes more depressed and one day he slashes his wrist and dies.
Pooranmasi
This short film is directed by Meghna Gulzar. The story starts somewhere in Punjab. Amrita Singh`s daughter Minisha Lamba has just been engaged with a Punjabi guy. Her father is out of the town on business purpose. Amrita Singh and her daughter are living alone. Amrita has led life mostly without love. When her father has left for the city Minisha consoles her mother and on a particular day her daughter puts on her mother with a colorful `dupatta.` She says her mother how beautiful she is. After so many years Amrita looks at herself. She clearly remembers that this is the night of full moon. Amrita`s lover had promised and he would be waiting outside the door. She decides to open it and let her desire take over her. They go outside in a field and after spending the night with him she returns home in the morning. Many villagers in the field notice the colorful dupatta on her head. They mistake her daughter for her. One of them also collects one of the broken bangles from the field where Amrita slept with her lover. All the villagers eventually come to their house with Minisha`s in-laws to break the marriage. Minisha understands what has happened as she knows that it was her mother. Embarrassed and harassed, she jumps into the well.
Strangers in the Night
`Strangers in the Night` is directed by Sanjay Gupta. Mahesh and Neha are husband and wife. They have the habit of discussing past distractions in their relationship. They do it on their every anniversary. Mahesh forces Neha to tell about her experience. She starts discussing how she once passionately kissed the guy`s hand. She also describes how she was taken in a railway station`s waiting room in a dark night. She tells that she would have done anything but did not do. Her husband becomes envious. Neha unravels the twist in the story. She ultimately reveals that she actually kisses his hand and hugs him to save a child. The child was being attacked by religious riots. And as the rioters cast and Neha`s cast was same that person did not attack him and by that time that child escaped. The love scenes were actually a part of their action.
Zahir
This short story is directed by Sanjay Gupta. Manoj Bajpayee comes to stay in an apartment of one of his friend somewhere in Versova. He comes there after he gets a setback from his girlfriend. There he finds Diya Mirza sharing an apartment in the same floor as Manoj. They eventually become good friends. Zahir wants to go deep in the relation but cannot do so because of Diya. He becomes ashamed on Diya`s reaction. One night when Manoj was with his friends and visiting many bars in the town Manoj sees Diya. She is a dancer in a dance bar. After coming home angry Manoj rapes her without hearing her protests. Next day he finds a note from her. In this letter she writes that she has AIDS and that was the reason of her rejection. This story is told by Manoj where he reveals that Diya has died before two years and he is just waiting for that.
Lovedale
This story is directed by Jasmeet Dhodi. Neha meets a lady on the train on her way to home. There she was getting engaged with a man whom she never met. The lady gives her an earring and vanishes at the next station. The station is Lovedale. In order to return the earring to the lady Neha gets down in the station and follows her to a house. In that house she finds Aftab Shibdasani who is painting. They become introduced. Aftab goes to Neha`s engagement unknowingly and feels upset. The reason is that he starts liking Neha. Neha is also unhappy. Her father played by Anupam Kher questions her doubt. She clears it and said that she can live with that person whom her parents decide for her. But her father mentioned as that means she can also live without him. Her father asked her is there somebody without whom she cannot live without. Neha tells about Aftab. Her father tells her his flashback about how he met a lady on the train. He had gifted an earring before the train left the station. Neha and her father compare the earrings. They come into a conclusion that her meeting with Aftab is not a coincidence. Neha breaks the engagement and goes to Lovedale to meet Aftab. Aftab becomes strange and also happy after seeing her. He also notices the earrings that Neha was wearing. In fact Neha was wearing the same earring that her father gave her. Neha tells Aftab that one of the earrings was given to her by a lady in the train and the other one is given by her father. Aftab shows her a picture of the lady who is his mother died 10 years ago.
Sex on the Beach
This story is directed by Apoorva Lakhia. Dino sees a book on the beach and picks it up. The title of the book is Death. He writes his name and date of birth as instructed and starts to read the book. A smart and young lady comes into the frame and sits down next to him. Wearing a golden swimsuit she invites him for dinner at 7 pm. Dino is on time and goes over well prepared with wine and condoms. When he is about to open her dress she tells that she will be back within two minutes with more surprises which Dino will like more. But Dino falls into a nap and wakes up with a sound. He sees her dead in the bathroom. When he goes close to examine her he finds that she is actually alive and chases him to the beach.
She starts running after Dino which seems that she is a ghost. The process goes the whole night and in the morning Dino is found dead in the beach. All are surrounded him, the girl comes and saves Dino and asks him to come along with her. Dino goes with her leaving his earthy body behind. The film shows that the story continues as in the next day another man sees the diary and writes his name and birth date on it and the same girl appear in the golden swimsuit.
Rice Plate
The short story is directed by Rohit Roy. Shabana Azmi plays the role of a Brahmin widow. She is on her way to visit her son and grandchildren to Mumbai by train. She forgets to take her wallet with her and heads to the station and as she was getting late she cannot go back after realizing it.
While going to the station she does not get on any taxi whose driver is Muslim. Ultimately she sees a taxi with picture of Hindu god and boards on that. The driver is too good and let her go without even taking money from her. But finally goes revealed the fact that though the taxi owner is Hindu the driver is Muslim. She ultimately misses her train and gets the information that her next train is after two hours. She goes to a canteen and orders a plate of rice. She has some coins with her and with that she manages a plate of rice. She leaves the plate at her table to wash her hand. When she comes back she sees Naseeruddin Shah eating it. She becomes angry that Shah was stealing her plate. Shabana forgets that Shah is a Muslim and starts eating from the same plate. After realizing it she immediately leaves the plate. She is shattered and wants to vomits out the food she takes as it is touched by a Muslim person. At the railway station she notices that she had also left her luggage and handbag in the canteen. She runs to the station and there she finds her belongings near a table and a place of rice on it. She realizes that she was actually mistaken and ate from that Muslim person`s plate. She becomes speechless. After returning to the station she sits in a bench and also offers place to a Muslim family. This action of her shows that she had changed her attitude a lot.
Gubbare
This story is directed by Sanjay Gupta. Anita and Rohit are newly married. They start a small quarrel over a small issue on a bus. Out of anger she moves away from Rohit. Anita sits besides Nana Patekar. He is carrying 11 smiley balloons with him for his wife. Anita starts talking to him. Nana tells her how he has to present his wife with the balloons every time he has angered her and how she makes a sweet dish for him in case she angers him. He explains that life is too short for spending in fighting. He explains different small incidents of his life and their quarrel as for example sleeping in a particular side in a bed, mending the ceiling fan, and even more smaller issues. When getting down at the stop he forgets to take the sorry card with him. Anita gets down from the bus and follows him to give it to him. She becomes stunt after seeing that Nana is speaking to his wife`s grave and she is dead. Anita gets the whole meaning and comes to her husband leaving the sorry card there in the graveyard.
Rise and Fall
This short story of the film `Dus Kahaniyan` is directed by Sanjay Gupta. The story starts with Sunil Shetty telling Sanjay Dutt that someone is going to kill him. Sanjay Dutt says that if there could be anybody who could kill him, it would be Sunil Shetty.
From this point the story of `Rise and Fall` cuts to flash back shows them two young boys. One of them gets a contract of killing a person. Both of them kill a person. These two kids eventually become Sanjay Dutt and Sunil Shetty. The naming of the film is appropriate as it shows the rise of the kids as adults and fall of them because of the greed of Sunil Shetty. Sunil Shetty wants to experience the power that Baba played by Sanjay Dutt is having. He gives `supari` for Baba to some people. When the killers come to kill Baba both of them killed by them as both of them were together.
