Born on 20th July, 1976, Debashish Sarbeswar Mohanty was a Bhubaneswar born right-arm medium - fast bowler. He has played in 2 Tests and 45 One Day Internationals from 1997 to 2001. Debashish Mohanty found success in the limited overs format, averaging fewer than 30 and taking over one wicket per game. He is known to have represented Odisha and East Zone in the Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy respectively.
Career of Debashish Mohanty
Debashish Mohanty had his first Test debut in August, 1997, against Sri Lanka but it was during the Sahara Cup against Pakistan in the same year that brought him into the limelight. He had a strong new ball partnership with Ventakatesh Prasad and in the 1999 Cricket World Cup. Debashish Mohanty was the second highest Indian wicket taker after Javagal Srinath, who used to be one of the finest Indian fast bowlers. Mohanty played 17 ODIs and picked up 29 wickets at an average in the early 20s and climbed into the top 20 of the ICC ODI World Rankings. After the World Cup though, Debashish Mohanty was in and out of the side and played his final ODI in 2001. He only played 2 Tests for his country and continued to represent Odisha with distinction until 2010.
In 2011, he was appointed as the coach for Odisha Ranji team but after 7 years in 2017, he was replaced by another former Indian cricketer Shiv Sundar Das.
