Following Shivaji`s death on 14th April, 1680, his eldest son , Shambhuji became the ruler of the vast kingdom, left by his awesome father. He unfortunately did not inherit the colossal mettle of his fantastic father. Still he strove to give his best to the greatest gift of his father, the Maratha kingdom.
He valiantly fought the perilous threat posed by the Mughals, regulated by the aggressive Aurangzeb himself. Aurangzeb`s Deccan policy of expansion entrapped Shambhuji on February,1689. His minister Kavi-Kulash , and 25 other main officers, were also caught. It was a heinous deed on the part of the mean Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb, who atrociously tormented the two chief captives to death on March , 1689in the city of Bahadurgarh. Many Maratha forts and the capital of Raigarh , were outrightedly squelched by the Mughal terror. However, Shambhuji`s younger brother , Rajaram, barely eluded danger, by running away from the city , and taking shelter in Jinji of Karnataka.
The Maratha Confederacy spawned the national resistance against the Mughals, and depleted the enemy of their resources. The Maratha stalwarts were Ramchandra Pant, Shankaraji Malhar, and Parashuram Trimbak. Parashuram came to the limelight as the regent or "Pratinidhi" in 1701.The Eastern Carnatic affairs were looked after by Pralhad Niraji, the first "Pratinidhi". The Maratha generals, Santaji Ghorpade and Dhanaji Jadava ransacked Mughal establishments. Such deeply traumatized were the anti-parties, that they paid "Chauths"to evade further ravages. The Marathas were accomplished in their mission of preparing the funeral pyre for the corpse of the crisis-ridden Mughal empire . Rajaram eventually emerged as the future monarch.
