The Ranji Trophy, 1989-90, one of the most popular domestic cricket tournaments in India, witnessed the participation of 27 teams that represented various Indian states. The organisers of the cricket tournament, BCCI divided the teams into five different zones, namely the Central Zone, East Zone, North Zone, South Zone and West Zone. After competing with each other at the zonal level, the top two teams from each zone were promoted to the knock out level for vying for the championship title. The participating teams in the tournament included the likes of Andhra, Assam, Baroda, Bengal, Bihar, Bombay, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Hyderabad, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Punjab, Railways, Rajasthan, Saurashtra, Services, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh and the Vidarbha.
Ranji Trophy, 1989-90, Central Zone League Matches: The Central Zone of the premium domestic cricket tournament in India, Ranji Trophy, 1989-90 comprised of 5 teams. All the teams came from the central region of India and they were also the regular participants in the tournament. The teams included the likes of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh and Railways. All these teams gave their best efforts to become one of the top two teams in the zone. The main reason behind the teams` endeavours was to get a chance to play in the knock out level of the tournament, so that they could vie for the championship title. However, only the teams like Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh became successful from this particular zone as they earned total of 63 and 58 points respectively at the end of the zonal level league matches.
Ranji Trophy, 1989-90, East Zone League Matches: 5 teams competed against each other under the East Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1989-90, one of the leading domestic cricket tournaments in India. All the regular teams were mainly representing various states from the Eastern region of India and the teams included the likes of Assam, Orissa, Tripura, Bengal and Bihar. They played the matches with great enthusiasm and cricketing excellence. All the teams tried their best to claim the top spot in the zone and to get a chance for competing with the top teams of the other zones at the knock out level of the tournament. However, the teams like Bengal and Bihar were eventually declared as the winners from the East zone as they earned total of 61 and 60 points respectively from the zonal level league matches.
Ranji Trophy, 1989-90, North Zone League Matches: The North Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1989-90 that is known to be one of the premium domestic cricket tournaments in India saw the participation of 6 teams. All the teams have been regularly participating in the tournament for the previous several years and most of them represented different states from the Northern region of India. The teams included the likes of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi and Services. The teams competed with each other very hard for becoming one of the top two teams in the zone and securing a berth at the knock out level of the tournament. This was a principal objective of the teams. However, the zone saw only the teams like Delhi and Punjab to be able to emerge as winners finally as the teams became the toppers in the zone. The Delhi team earned a total of 83 points and Punjab earned 73 points at the end of the zonal level league matches.
Ranji Trophy, 1989-90, South Zone League Matches: The South Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1989-90 comprised of 6 teams that were mainly coming from the Southern region of India. The teams were participating in the tournament on a regular basis for the past several editions and they included the likes of Andhra, Goa, Hyderabad, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The teams first played against each other in the zone with the hope of becoming one of the top two teams in the zone. Then the top two teams of the zone were promoted to the knock out level of the tournament for competing with the top teams of the other zones for the championship title. The teams like Karnataka and Hyderabad became the toppers in the zone with total of 87 and 82 points respectively and they also entered into the knock out level from the zone.
Ranji Trophy, 1989-90, West Zone League Matches: 5 teams played against each other under the West Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1989-90, the leading domestic cricket tournament in India. All the teams were the regular participants in the tournament and they included the likes of Bombay, Baroda, Gujarat, Saurashtra and Maharashtra. Most of the teams were representing various states from the Western region of India and they competed with each other very hard to become one of the top two teams in the zone. The teams were also trying to get the promotion to the knock out level of the tournament as the tournament rules and regulations would allow only the top two teams to compete at the knock out level. However, the teams like Bombay and Baroda eventually claimed the top spots in the zone by earning total of 49 and 46 points from the zonal level league matches.
Ranji Trophy, 1989-90, Knock Out Matches: After the completion of the league matches in all the zones of the tournament, 10 teams were permitted to enter into the knock out level of the Ranjhi Trophy tournament. BCCI, the organisers of the Ranji Trophy, 1989-90 that is the premium domestic cricket tournament in India issues such permission. The teams included the likes of Bihar, Bengal, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Bombay, Baroda, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Hyderabad and Punjab. These teams comprised of the top two teams from every zone. The teams played against each other in the Pre-Quarter-Finals, Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Final matches of the tournament and gave their best efforts to become the coveted championship title. However, it was the Bengal team that eventually became successful to win the title, after beating the Delhi team in the Final.
