PadmadurgPadmadurg is also popularly known as `Kasa Fort` and is amongst the forts located in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. It was constructed by the legendary Maratha ruler named Chhatrapati Shivaji in the north-western portion of the Fort Janjira, aimed to demolish the Janjira Fort. The major part of Padmadurg is in good condition, presently. Visitors and travellers can easily approach Padmadurg with the aide of boats which are available close to the Fish Market, particularly from the area of Murud-Koliwada or Mahadev Koli Vasahat. Various kinds of guns are present inside the fort which was placed above some wooden gun-carriages in towers. Padmadurg or `Murud Peta` is also referred to as `Lotus Fort` and water used to be supplied to this fort from a giant cistern which used to be filled with water during the monsoons and was enough to last throughout the dry season.

Daulat Khan who served as the admiral of the ruler Shivaji is believed to have established this fort when Shivaji wanted to attack the Siddis of Janjira. Kasa is the name of the rock on which Padmadurg had been created and there are four bastions in this fort. The main entrance of this fort is still in a secure condition. After creating this fort, Shivaji had declared that he had been capable of constructing another `Rajpuri` or fort which would obscure the grandness of the Rajpuri made by the Siddi community. However Padmadurg was not as large as the Janjira Fort. The fort is slightly irregular in shape is currently employed as a state prison meant to punish the political prisoners.
