Padma Vibhushan awardeesRanked as the second highest civilian award in India, the Padma Vibhushan Award was introduced by a Presidential decree on 2nd January, in 1954. The award is given by the Government of India, to recognise excellence of Indian citizens in any field. Recognising notable services to the nation, including services rendered by government servants, is also another objective behind presenting this award. Not only the Indians, the citizens from other countries can also receive the award for showing excellence in their respective fields. The Padma Vibhushan Awardees receive a medal and a citation from the President of India. Since its inception in 1954, a total of 235 people have been given the award. So far, the award was given for the last time in the year 2009. A number of 6 people received the award in 1954, while the year 2009 saw 10 people becoming Padma Vibhushan Awardees. The award can be given posthumously, as well. However, the award was suspended for a short period from 13th July 1977 to 26th January 1980, due to unfortunate circumstances, no Padma Vibhushan Award was given between the year 1992 and 1998, as well.
