Lac Crafts of KarnatakaLac crafts of Karnataka are one of the unique and well practiced crafts of Karnataka. Chennapatna, on the Mysore Highway, Bangalore is well known for creating excellent lacquered toys.

The lac crafts of Karnataka are a distinct form as the artisans give the wood items a different look by applying lacquer on them. This craft is practiced by the craftsmen at Chennapatna. Lacquering is done on hand or power operated lathe. The artisans prefer the hand lathe for creating slender and delicate items. Prepared coloured lac stick is pressed against the shaped wooden object to be lacquered. This is completed with a unique process. While the object keeps revolving, the heat from friction softens the lac and enables the colour to fix on the items to be lacquered. The craftsmen involved in the lac crafts of Karnataka, paint the designs with brush on figures, objects and toys.

The lac crafts of Karnataka have been promoted by the government to some extent. The craftsmen create different exclusively bright and beautifully designed items that include play things for the children, kitchen wares, table wares, bangles and jewellery, furniture items, cradles and many more utilitarian items.
