According to Part I, Chapter V of Kamasutra, there are many qualities for which the wives of other people may be resorted to. But there should be some other criteria on which the liking should depend such as the possibility of their acquirement, their strength for cohabitation, the danger in uniting with them, and the future effect of these relationships.:

•Love of the eye
•Attachment of the mind
•Constant reflection
•Destruction of sleep
•Emaciation of the body
•Turning away from objects of enjoyment
•Removal of shame
•Madness
•Fainting
•Death

According to ancient authors, a man should study the woman body or her characteristic marks and signs to know the nature, truthfulness, purity, will, and also the intensity or weakness of her passions. But Vatsayana`s Kamasutra is of opinion that the forms of bodies, and the characteristic marks and signs can sometimes proved to be wrong. So according to him women should be judged by their conduct, by the external appearance of their thoughts, and by the movements of their bodies.

According to Gonikaputra, the woman usually gets attracted to every handsome man, she is acquainted with and so does the man. They easily fall in love with every beautiful woman. But due to various constrains they do not take further steps. The woman when loves someone sometimes does the following actions, she loves without looking upon the right or wrong, she never tries to take the first step to gain over a man or when the man tries it she simply shrinks from him whether she want the union or not. But when the process is repeated over and over again at last she gives her consent. It is usually said that if some man gained anything very easily he doesn`t give much importance to it and only desires a thing, which cannot be achieved easily.

Kamasutra states that the causes of a woman rejecting the approaches of a man are as follows:

•Affection for her husband
•Desire of lawful progeny
•Want of opportunity
•Anger at being addressed by the man too familiarly
•Difference in rank of life
•Want of certainty on account of the man being devoted travelling
•Thinking that the man may be attached to some other person

•Fear of the man`s not keeping his intentions secret
•Thinking that the man is too devoted to his friends, and has too great a regard for them
•The apprehension that he is not in earnest
•Bashfulness on account of his being an illustrious man
•Fear on account of his being powerful, or possessed of too impetuous passion, in the case of the deer woman

•Despair at her own imperfections
•Fear of discovery
•Disillusion at seeing his grey hair or shabby appearance
•Fear that he may be employed by her husband to test her chastity
•The thought that he has too much regard for morality

The man if sense any one or the other from the above list should try to eradicate it from the very beginning. He should try to remove all the doubts and shyness of the woman by showing his great love and affection for her. He should show some way of access to remove the difficulty of the meetings, or of his inaccessibility. He should try to make himself familiar and tells the woman not to give him excessive respect.
