Jwala Gutta is a renowned female Indian Badminton Player, who is of mixed Indian and Chinese origin. She is considered to be amongst the best Women`s Doubles badminton players of the country. This is proven by her long record of success. Jwala Gutta has made her mark in the international badminton scenario as well. This left-handed Indian badminton player has won the National Badminton Championships 13 times repeatedly till 2010. She has partnered with Ashwini Ponnappa and earlier with Shruti Kurien.
Early Life of Jwala Gutta
Jwala Gutta was born on 7th September, 1983 at Wardha, Maharashtra and raised in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. She was born to a Telugu father, Kranti Gutta and a Chinese mother, Yelan Gutta. Yelan was the granddaughter of Gandhian named Tseng. Jwala Gutta`s parents were married in the year 1982. Jwala Gutta completed her education in Hyderabad and started playing badminton at a very tender age. She made a strong doubles pair in the badminton court with Shruti Kurien, another popular Indian badminton player. At the age of 10 years Jwala Gutta started her training under S.M. Arif, famous badminton coach who has been conferred with the Dronacharya Award. Jwala Gutta won her first title at the Mini National Badminton Championship, held for under 13 female players. This tournament was held at Thrissur, Kerala.
Career of Jwala Gutta
In 2000, Jwala Gutta won the Junior National Badminton Championship. At that time, she was of 17 years of age. In that same year Jwala Gutta, partnering along with Shruti Kurien, won both the Women`s Doubles Junior National Championship and Senior National Badminton Championship. This pair won the Women`s Doubles National title for 7 years consecutively, from 2002 to 2008. Further, Jwala, in partnership with Pullela Gopichand, a very famous Indian badminton player, won the Mixed Doubles National Badminton Championship in the year 2003. In 2005, she partnered with Valiyaveetil Diju and clinched the Mixed Doubles title. The pair of Jwala and Diju went on to win the Mixed Doubles National title in 2007 and 2008 consecutively.
Jwala Gutta made her venture at the International Badminton arena in 2002 when she participated at the Uber Cup tournament. She also reached the Pre-Quarter Final round of the India Asia Satellite tournament in the year 2002. In 2004, Jwala reached the Semi Final round of the Indian Asian Satellite tournament. She reached the Quarter Final round of both the Sri Lanka International tournament 2006 and India Satellite tournament 2006.
Jwala Gutta gave wonderful performances in doubles events. She reached the Semi Final round of the Indian Asian Satellite tournament in the year 2004, and ended up as the Runner Up at the Le Volant d`Or Tournament in 2004. Moreover, she also reached the Final Rounds of the Scottish International tournament in the year 2004 and also of 40th Portuguese Badminton Championship 2004. In 2006, Jwala Gutta won the Sri Lanka International Satellite tournament and in 2007 she grabbed the Cyprus Badminton International tournament. In 2007, Jwala won the Pakistan International Challenge tournament and the Indian International Challenge tournament.
She also won the Nepal International Series tournament in 2008 and Yonex Dutch Open Grand Prix in the year 2008 in the Women`s Doubles category. She also gave some wonderful performances in the Mixed Doubles category. Jwala has grabbed a number of titles like the Jakarta Satellite tournament and Welsh International tournament in 2005, Sri Lanka International Satellite tournament in 2007, Indian International Challenge tournament and Cyprus Badminton International tournament in 2007, Nepal International Series tournament in 2008, KLRC Bulgaria Open Grand Prix tournament and Bitburger Open Grand Prix tournament in 2008. Jwala Gutta has also achieved a gold medal in the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games. In 2011, she became the 1st women doubles pair to win a bronze medal in world championships 2011.
Personal Life of Jwala Gutta
Jwala Gutta was married to a badminton player named Chetan Anand, a winner of Arjuna Award, on 17th July 2005. However, they were divorced later.
