Jammu and Kashmir National Conference is considered the largest political party in Jammu and Kashmir.

During the time of Indian Independence in 1947, Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC)was under the leadership of Sheikh Abdullah. Since then JKNC dominated electoral politics in the state, and was chaired afterwards by Sheikh`s son, Farooq Abdullah and now is headed by Farooq`s son, Omar Abdullah. However, the party suffered a shocking defeat of a huge margin by the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party.
