It is actually an overhead punch, at the moment of impact the fist is typically held in horizontal position with the palm facing the ground.
Uses for the Jab
Defence
The jab plays a major role in defence of a fighter. Its power and speed of execution reach can help keep the opponent at a distance, preventing him from charging in. while moving back, defensive jabs can also be employed.
Speed Jab
This particular jab facilitates in agility and mobility for a boxer. It is always employed with an intention to score crucial points. The boxers use this punch when they protect the balance and mobility of their stance.
Power Jab
In a jab power is added if it is thrown with a modest step forward. The main drawback of this technique is that it takes the boxer out of the boxing stance, and in the process committing him to the punch rather more than the speed jab. The pivotal jab is most powerful among all jabs. Here the weight shifts entirely to the main foot that pivots to put the mass of the body behind the punch. While jabbing from the hip, instead of tight guard, will add to the power to the jab, at the cost of speed.
Jab to the Body
Jabbing is the process employed which is relatively uncommon as it increases the vulnerability of the fighter to a counterpunch. Traditionally the fighter bends the entire waist and fires a powerful jab to a midsection of his opponent in an attempt at getting to drop his guard. It is just not possible to put his body weight behind this punch, so the power is limited.
