The career of Gaurav Ghei includes the wining of three Asian Tour titles: the 1995 Gadgil Western Masters, the 2006 Taiwan Masters, and the 2007 Beijing Open. In 1997 Gaurav Ghei became the first Indian golfer to qualify for The Open Championship.
Gaurav Ghei started playing golf at a very early age. He mastered the game and started playing it professionally from the year 1991. A promising name in Indian golf, Gaurav Ghei as an amateur won the East India Amateur, West India Amateur and the North India Amateur. He was the proud winner of the Desaru classic in 1994. Thereafter, there was no looking back for this ace player. The historic win of Gaurav Ghei is at the $500,000 Gadgil Western Masters in November 1995, catapulted him to national fame. As if this were not enough, the subsequent year characterized as another significant time in the life of this youngster. In 1996, Gaurav Ghei made international headlines, when he defeated Ryder Cup veteran, Colin Montgomerie, in the 16-nation Alfred Dunhill Cup, at St Andrews, as India stunned not only the hosts, but also the strong favourites, Scotland. In June 1997, Gaurav Ghei, who was set on a roll, created yet another history by becoming the first Indian to qualify for the prestigious British Open, through the tough Sectional Qualifying event and played at the Royal Troon. In 1999, Gaurav Ghei bagged the Asian Nations Cup held in Malaysia. Later, he returned victorious, in the 2006 Taiwan Masters and also bagged the title in the Pine Valley Beijing Open, held in the year 2007.

Gaurav Ghei came in the limelight of the golf world when he participated in The Open Championships. The Open Championship which is often referred to as The Open or the British Open is the oldest of the four major championships in professional golf. It was held in the United Kingdom. It is administered by The R&A and is the only major outside the United States. The Open Championship is currently the third major of the year, between the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship, and is played in mid-July.
