Exercises for Ajna Chakra

The Ajna Chakra or the Brow Chakra is situated at the center of the forehead. It is associated with Indigo color and referred to as `third eye` or `mind center`. The Ajna Chakra is connected to the pituitary gland. The visual images are received through the open Brow Chakra. There are many asanas associated with this chakra.

Yogic Eye Exercise
This is an exercise for strengthening and centering the physical eyes. It is also helpful for eyestrain, vision improvement, and general fatigue from doing a lot of paperwork or heavy reading.

The practitioner must begin the exercise in a seated meditation position with his spine straight. He must close his eyes and experience the darkness. He must try to bring his awareness to the point between his eyes, in the center of the head. As the practitioner feels centered he must open his eyes and gaze straight ahead. Gradually he must look upward, stretching the eyes skyward, without moving the head. Then tracing a straight line downward he must gazing as low as his vision can reach, without moving his head. This exercise must be repeated upward and then downward again. Lastly he should return his eyes to center, and close them, returning to the darkness.

The practitioner must again open his eyes and center them. He must repeat the above movements, going instead from corner to corner, first from upper right to lower left, two times, then from upper left to lower right, also two times.

Colour Meditation
This is a simple visualization for healing and cleansing the chakras, and developing the ability of the inner eye to create and perceive color. The practitioner must begin in a meditation position, preferably seated. When he is sufficiently grounded he needs to imagine a bright disk of white light, floating directly above his head. This light will be the source from which he can draw each color.

Assuming the first colour to be red, it must be pulled down through one`s own crown chakra, down through the whole spinal column and filling up the first chakra with a vibrant red color. One needs to hold on to that color in his first chakra for a few moments and feel how he feels about his body with this color.

Next the practitioner must return to the area above the crown chakra and pull orange light out of the white disk. He needs to run it down through his body, noticing what effect this color has on him. Gradually he must bring it down to his second chakra, and fill his belly with a vibrant, orange color.

Again he must return to the crown and find a golden yellow light to pull through the body down to the third chakra. As the third chakra has to do with energy distribution throughout the body, these rays are important for spreading the sense of inner fire.

Now he must come to the heart and the color green. He needs to feel within himself that the colour washes over him, bringing with it a sense of love and affinity for the world around him.

Next, he reaches into the white disk for the color blue, pulling it down into the throat chakra. He must allow it to soothe his throat as well as relax his arms and shoulders. He must feel the blue rays extend all around his throat, communicating with all that is around him.

Next, he approaches the third eye itself, usually seen as a deep indigo blue. Here the practitioner must feel the coolness of this color as it bathes his third eye. He must allow it to wash any foreign images away, cleansing and soothing the inner screen.

Lastly, the crown chakra is seen as a bright vibrant violet color. He must feel this violet light streaming into his crown chakra, energizing and balancing each of the chakras. The practitioner at the end of this exercise must check whether all the chakras retain their colors. The body here is filled with a continuous rainbow. He must notice how the different colors are felt.
