Block print of Eastern India is generally practiced in the Indian states of West Bengal, Orissa, Bihar and Jharkhand. This ancient craft is not the traditional craft of these East Indian states, and was introduced here around the 20th century. The origin of block printing can be traced to Rajasthan. However, when this craft was ushered into the eastern belt of the nation, it was warmly embraced by the natives, following which this craft achieved the unique, indigenous deigns and styles of this region. Products of hand-block printing are quite popular in Eastern parts of India.

Block Printing of West Bengal
Since the 1940s, block printing commenced in the region of Serampur in West Bengal, which is located at a distance of around 60 km from the city of Kolkata. Serampur`s block printed products were favoured in Kolkata, where they started to be sold inside saree shops in the city. Wooden block printing was the initial technique of this craft, in this region. Gradually, the process of screen printing started evolving in West Bengal, since it was comparatively easier than the former. Block printed textiles were offered at reasonable prices in Kolkata, as the artisans were able to save some money on transportation costs.

Block Printing of Bihar
Wooden block printing is popular in Bihar, particularly in Patna, Biharsharif and Darbhanga. Motifs of peacocks, animals, birds, mangoes, dolls and flowers are designed on `chunris`, which are in high demand in this Indian state. Metal block printing is also performed extensively here. Some block printing artisans are making attempts to fuse hand paintings of `Madhubani` in textiles which employ block printing.

Eastern India specializes in the production of innumerable block printed textiles, equipped with fashionable motifs, attractive colours and patterns. Block print artisans employ a several techniques to produce beautiful stoles, `sarees` and other garments in West Bengal, Orissa and other states of Eastern India. Certain block printed garments utilize a twin combination of natural dyes and block prints in Eastern India, to add to their visual appeal.
