Avadai Raghunatha Tondaiman, also known as Raya Rahutta Raya Vajridu Raya Mannida Raya Avadai Raghunatha Tondaiman, was the native ruler of the Karambakudi and belonged to the Kallar caste, which is among the 3 associated castes of south India that comprise the Mukkulathor confederacy. He was also a vassal and feudatory, holding land by feudal fee, of the Vijayanagar Empire, which was an empire in southern India, located in the Deccan Plateau region. Avadai Raghunatha Tondaiman was born in the early 17th century in Karambakudi region. He was a descendant of Thirumalai Tondaiman, who migrated from Tirupathi in the territory known as Tondaimandalam or Tondai Nadu and relocated to Anbukkoil.
Raya Rahutta Raya Vajridu Raya Mannida Raya Avadai Raghunatha Tondaiman seized the entire modern day region of Pudukkottai for Sriranga Raya III, the Vijayanagara king, and defeated the reigning Parava Raya dynasty in the year 1639. He granted the title and style of Raya Rahutta Raya Vajridu Raya Mannida Raya by Sriranga Raya III. After the death of Avadai Raghunatha Tondaiman, he was succeeded by Raghunatha Raya Tondaiman, his son. He laid the foundation of the Pudukkottai kingdom.
