Assam State Museum, Guwahati, AssamEstablished as the Assam Provincial Museum in 1940 by the Kamarupa Anusandhan Samiti, the Assam State Museum is located in the heart of Guwahati in the state of Assam. Both the institutions, Kamarupa Anusandhan Samiti and the Assam State Museum were founded by Rai Bahadur Kanak Lal Barua. The main purpose of this was the preservation and promotion of Assam"s history and cultural heritage through collection, research and publication. The museum functioned as a non-profit organization until 1953 when it was taken over by the state government.

Collections of Assam State Museum
A three storied colonial structure, the Assam State Museum displays objects associated with Assam"s history and the socio cultural importance of the Assamese people. The museum exhibits unique antiquities which are under different sections like epigraphy, sculptures, natural history, art and crafts, anthropology, folk art etc. There is also a library in the museum which was established in 1985. The library is rich in its stenographic collections and other various periodicals, journals and books relating to art, culture, mythology, biography, encyclopaedic works and even the Asiatic Society journals of the country.
