The game of Golf started its journey in India during the first half of the nineteenth century and since then, it has for popularity in almost all over the country. As the Indian people love playing the game very much, the Indian Golf is being managed in a proper way for the past several years. India has produced several top class Golf players so far and they have earned a lot of recognition and reputation in the international arena. The Indian Golf players have also been honoured by the Government of India through the prestigious Arjuna Award, for their wonderful contribution to Golf. Hence, the number of Arjuna Awardees in Golf is quite a handsome one.

The first of the Arjuna Awardees in Golf was Capt. P. G. Sethi, who received the award in the very first year of its inception, in 1961. In 1963, the award was given to Shri A. S. Malik for showing good performances in various tournaments. Then after a gap of 3 years, Shri R. K. Pitamber won the award in the year 1967. After another gap of 5 years, Smt. Anjani N. Desai became the winner of the award in 1972. She was followed by Shri Vikramjit Singh, who won it in 1973 and in 1975; the Arjuna Award was presented to Shri S. K. Jamshed. Smt. Sita Rawlley received the award in the year 1977-78 and there was a gap of 4 years, after that.

In 1982, Shri Lakshman Singh enlisted his name into the list of Arjuna Awardees in Golf. After him, Km. Nonital Lal won the award in 1987 and he was followed by Shri Ali Sher, who won the award in 1991. Ali Sher won the award for becoming the first Indian to win the Indian Open championship. In 1996, the award went to Shri Amit Krishan Luthra and in the very next year in 1997, Shri Harmeet Kahlon received the Arjuna Award. The new era of Indian Golf that presented a number of extremely talented Golfers to the country saw a number of players winning the Arjuna Award, too. In the year 1999, Shri Chiranjeev Milkha Singh (popularly known as Jeev Milkha Singh) won the Arjuna Award and in 2002, Shri Shiv Kapur became the winner. The award was given to Jyoti Randhawa in 2004, while the year 2007 saw Arjun Atwal becoming one of the Arjuna Awardees in Golf.
