Yash Raj Films or YRF is an entertainment based company formed by a celebrated Indian film director and producer, Yash Chopra. He initially worked for his brother`s production company, B.R. Films and later in the year 1976, set up his own company. Since its inception Yash Raj Films have offered innumerable hits like Kabhi Kabhi, Trishul, Silsila, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaenge, Dil to Pagal Hai, Veer Zara, Dhoom 2 and many more. Currently the board of directors of the production house comprise of Yash Chopra (also chairman and founder), Sanjeev Kohli (also Senior Consultant and Director) (Formerly CEO), Aditya Chopra (also vice chairman & son of Yash Chopra) and Uday Chopra ( son of Yash Chopra).
History of Yash Raj Films
The first release of Yash Raj Films came in 1973 with the Chopra-directed Daag: A Poem of Love, a drama about bigamy, starring Rajesh Khanna, Raakhee and Sharmila Tagore. Yash Raj Films had four more releases in the 1970s, including the family drama Kabhie Kabhie and the action film Kaala Patthar, both of which starred Amitabh Bachchan. The sole commercial success in the 1980s was the Sridevi-starring romantic drama Chandni. The year 1995 marked the directorial debut of Yash Chopra`s son, Aditya Chopra, with the highly successful romantic drama Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, the film has the longest theatrical run in Indian cinema history. Other successful releases of the 1990s were Darr (1993) and Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), both of which starred Shah Rukh Khan.
First Film Label by Yash Raj Films
Yash Raj launched its new film label in 2006 and ventured into selling DVDs and Audio CDs. They are also selling their music on iTunes. Yash Raj Films tied up with The Walt Disney Company to co-produce animation movies in India in May 2007. Yash Raj Films also has its own music company by the name Yash Raj Music. Over the years Yash Raj Films have expanded itself into marketing and distributing its own DVDs and CDs all over the world. The Yash Raj Films are bequeathed with a fully integrated Film Studio. With its outstanding sound stages, complete soundproof space, post production facilities and video recording, it can be labelled as the most equipped film studio.
Credited with the honour of being the number 1 film distribution house in India, Yash Raj Films has entered into collaboration with the Walt Disney Company to co-produce animation movies in India in May 2007.In June 2008, Yash Raj Films declared its multi million-dollar collaboration venture contract with Dubai Infinity Holdings. YRF Studios has also been involved in production of television software, ad films, music videos, and documentaries. The first film to be shot was Amir Khan and Kajol starrer Fanaa.1st January, 2010 marked the entry of YRF Television, on Sony TV Channel ushering a new wave of television viewing experience.
Yash Raj has expanded its wings with time and has established its offices in different sectors such as Delhi, Jalandhar, Jaipur, Amravati, Indore, Bangalore, Secunderabad, Kolkata, Chennai, and Cochin in India; the United Kingdom; the United States; and the United Arab Emirates.
