With its rich natural beauty and lush green surroundings, the north eastern state of Meghalaya, also known as the "abode of clouds" is home to some stunning and spectacular waterfalls. The waterfalls of Meghalaya cascade down a great height into the steep mountains and are major tourist attractions. Discussed elaborately below are some of the popular waterfalls of Meghalaya:

Bishop Falls: The 22nd highest waterfall in India, the three tiered Bishop Falls is located in Shillong. Cascading from a height of 135 m, the Bishop Falls is often referred to be similar to the Beadon Falls since both of these falls tumble down the same escarpment into a cavernous gorge.

Nohkalikai Falls: The Nohkalikai Falls in the East Khasi Hills stands at a height of 1,115 ft and has a total width of 75 ft. It is one of the highest waterfall plunges in the country and is located near Cherrapunji, one of the wettest places on Earth. The waterfall is surrounded by lush greenery and is fed by rainwater. The plunge pool formed at the foothills of the Nohkalikai Falls is somewhat green in colour. The Nohkalikai Falls has one of the tragic legends associated with it, of a grief stricken mother who plunged to her death, unable to overcome her sorrow over the murder of her daughter by her husband.

Kynrem Falls: Falling from a height of 305 m, the Kynrem Falls is the 7th highest waterfall in India and one of the highest waterfalls in Meghalaya. This three tiered waterfall is located within the Thangkharang Park.

Nohsngithiang Falls: Also known as the Seven Sisters Waterfalls or the Mawsmai Falls, the Nohsngithiang Falls is one of the most popular attractions in the state. One of the prime attractions of this falls is that during the monsoon, it flows down in seven parallel cascades and the water plunges over the limestone cliffs of the Khasi Hills. The water flows from a height of 315 m with an average width of 70 m and it gets illuminated by the sun from dawn to sunset.

Dianthlen Falls: Deriving its name from the Khasi word "thlen", which means python, the Dianthen Falls is one of the finest waterfalls in Meghalaya. This waterfall attracts tourists, especially during the months of monsoon, when the turbulence of the water is comparatively more than the rest of the year.

Langshiang Falls: Cascading from a height of 337 m, the Langshiang Falls is known to be the third highest waterfalls in India. It is located in the West Khasi Hills and is an ideal tourist spot. The Langshiang Falls is formed when two different streams of River Kynshi meet near Sangriang.

Sweet Falls: Located in the East Khasi Hills about 5 km away from the Happy Valley, the Sweet Falls is one of the popular waterfalls in Meghalaya but is often termed to be the most dangerous of the lot.

Krang Suri Falls: Located in Jaintia Hills District in the Amlarem Civil Sub Division, the Krang Suri Falls is regarded as one of the most beautiful waterfall of the District. The District Administration has taken steps to enhance the beauty of the spot. Chiselled and gravelled footpaths have been laid here.

Tyrshi Falls: The Tyrshi Falls is located in Jaintia Hills District on the Shillong Jowai Road. This fall is located about 5 km from Jowai. A span of green paddy fields located nearby has been well connected by an arch bridge that leads to the mesmerising Pynthor or paddy-fields below.

Thlumuwi Falls: The Thlumuwi Falls is situated in the Jaintia Hills District on the Jowai Amlarem Road. A gravelled footpath has been built here for the visitors.

Pelga Falls: It is located in the West Garo Hills District at the distance of 7 km from Tura. The Pelga Falls also serves as a favourite tourist spot. A footpath has been constructed here by the tourism department. A typical traditional Garo bamboo bridge has also been made over Ganol River.

Imil Chang Dare Falls: This waterfall is located in West Garo Hills District in the vicinity of Tura Chokpot. The stream on which the Imil Chang Dare Falls is located flows through a deep, narrow winding bed of crevice rocks. The stream then leads to a broad wide opening and flows down forming a broad waterfall. A deep pool forms below the waterfall apt for swimming purpose. The place also serves as an ideal picnic spot.

Rong`bang Falls: The Rong"bang Falls is located in West Garo Hills District almost 25 miles away from Tura on the Tura William Nagar Road and is close to the Rombagre village. The tributary of the Simsang River is visible from here. The magnitude of the fall can be felt at the bottom of the waterfalls. The water is in its full swing during the monsoon months. It is clustered on either side by vast evergreen hills of bamboos that look stunning.
