Early Life of Vishal Bhardwaj
Vishal Bhardwaj was born on 4th August 1965 in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, to Ram Bhardwaj, a famed poet and lyricist, and Satya Bhardwaj, a housewife. However he grew up in Meerut. Vishal Bhardwaj moved to Delhi after completing his schooling and graduated from Hindu College of Delhi University. In the college he nurtured his skills and also met his wife Rekha Bhardwaj. He also indulged actively in Delhi theatres. He began playing harmonium for Ghazal singers during food festivals in Delhi`s Pragati Maidan. Later he was introduced to R.V. Pandit and bagged a job in his CBS music company in Delhi.

A friend of Vishal Bhardwaj recommended his name to the renowned filmmaker Gulzar with whom he worked for television shows like Alice in Wonderland, The Jungle Book and Gubbare. Subsequently he composed music for Gulzar`s film Maachis which earned him commercial as well as critical acclaim. He also composed the score for several films such as Godmother, Ishqiya, 7 Khoon Maaf, Kaminey, Omkara, Maqbool, Chachi 420, Satya and others. He also composed the title track for Star Plus` STAR Parivaar Awards and the new anthem for the channel `Tu Hi Tu`. Vishal Bhardwaj had come to Mumbai for pursuing a career in music direction and he ventured in film direction for creating opportunities for music composing. However he developed a keen interest in film direction after watching the retrospective of Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski in a film festival held in Kerala. He made his directional debut with a children`s film Makdee and gained critical acclamations. Afterwards he directed the film Maqbool which was an adaptation of Shakespearean play Macbeth. Based on a Ruskin Bond`s story, he directed the film The Blue Umbrella which was followed by his next film Omkara, Bhardwaj`s second Shakespearan endeavour based on the play Othello. The later was musical hit and rendered Vishal Bhardwaj international recognition both as a director and music composer. He also worked in the second unit of the legendary Francis Ford Coppola`s film Youth Without Youth. He also directed an 11 minute short film Blood Brothers which is a part of a series of HIV-AIDS awareness films created by Mira Nair. In the following years Vishal Bhardwaj directed a number of other films including Kaminey featuring Priyanka Chopra and Shahid Kapoor, 7 Khoon Maaf based on Ruskin Bond short story Susanna`s Seven Husbands starring Priyanka Chopra, John Abraham, Naseeruddin Shah and Irrfan Khan and Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola featuring Imran Khan, Pankaj Kapoor and Anushka Sharma. He received critical applauses for his directional venture which established him as one of the noted directors of Bollywood. He also produced, wrote and composed music for the film Ishqiya, another film which gathered great reviews. Vishal Bhardwaj has also done playback singing for a few films like Omkara, No Smoking, U Me Aur Hum, Kaminey and others.

In 1997 Vishal Bhardwaj won Filmfare R D Burman Award for Maachis. In 1999 and 2008 he won Rajat Kamal Awards at the National Film Awards in the categories of Best Music Director for Godmother and Special Jury Award for Omkara while in 2006 he received Golden Lotus Award for Best Children`s Film for The Blue Umbrella. In 2005 he got IIFA Award for Best Screenplay for the film Maqbool, in 2007 for Best Adaptation for the movie Omkara and in 2011 Best Dialogue for the film Ishqiya. He won the same award also in 2011 for composing the score of film Ishqiya. He was also conferred a Zee Cine Award for Best Dialogue for Maqbool in 2005.
