Scholars are of the view that the ancestors of Vindhya Shakti were the Samanta of the Satavahanas. Taking advantage of the situation Vindhya Shakti declared himself independent. The Puranas refer to him as the founder of the Vakataka dynasty. An inscription of Ajanta has showered the praises on Vindhya Shakti. It is stated that he increased his power by fighting big wars and that he was extraordinary both in war and charity. He has been compared with Indra and Vishnu. He maintained a big cavalry with which he fought the enemies.

Some scholars are of the view that he had extended his empire up to Malava. Puranas describe him as the rarer of Vidisa or Malva and purika or berar. It appears that his party name was different and after conquering some portions of Vindhya Pradesh, he became famous as Vindhya Shakti. And this can be called as the reason behind it. According to the puranas he ruled for 90 years, but it seems to be an exaggeration. Probably he died about 575 A.D.
