Vijay Anand was a noted Indian film director, screenwriter, producer, editor and actor whose works mainly encompassed the Hindi film industry. Also known as Goldie Anand, he had been associated with acclaimed films such as Johny Mera Naam and Guide. Most of his films were produced under the in-house banner Navketan Films which was owned by the Anand family. Although Vijay Anand tried a number of roles in the Hindi film industry, he is most remembered for his films as a director.
Early Life of Vijay Anand
Vijay Anand was born on 22nd January 1934 in Gurdaspur district of Punjab in British India. His father Pishori Lal Anand was an advocate. He was the youngest of four siblings including producer and director Dev Anand and Chetan Anand and Sheela Kanta Kapur who was a famed Hindi film star. Sheela Kanta Kapur was the mother of acclaimed film director Shekhar Kapur.
Career of Vijay Anand
Vijay Anand made his directional debut in the year 1957 with the film Nau Do Gyarah which was shot in just 40 days. His successful projects as a director includes films like Rajput, Ram Balram, Kala Bazar, Teesri Manzil, Tere Mere Sapne, Jewel Thief, Johny Mera Naam and many more. Teesri Manzil was his first non-Navketan film which he directed under the production of Nasir Hussain. His 1965 film Guide starring Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman earned huge critical acclamations. The movie was based on R. K. Narayan`s novel The Guide. Navketan films also attempted a remake of Guide for an international release but could not garner much success in the same.
The stylish picturizations of songs of his films like `Honthon Mein Aisi Baat` (Jewel Thief), `Kaaton Se Kheech` (Guide) and `O Haseena` (Teesri Manzil) were also praised. He also directed a few Malayalam films. His films as an actor enlist Kora Kagaz, Haqeeqat, Chhupa Rustam, Double Cross, Ghoonghroo Ki Aawaz and Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki. He also acted in the film Chor Chor opposite Leena Chandavarkar which was a song-less thriller. In 1994 he also appeared in the television series Tehkikaat essaying the role of detective Sam. For a brief period he served the Central Board of Film Certification, India`s censor board, as the Chairman. He resigned from the post in 2002 owing to ideological differences with the government about introduction of ratings for adult movies.
Achievements of Vijay Anand
Vijay Anand won Filmfare Best Director Award in the year 1965 for the movie Guide. In 1970 he received Filmfare Best Editing Award, Filmfare Best Screenplay Award and BFJA Awards as Best Editor for Johnny Mera Naam. He also won BFJA Awards as Best Editor for the movie Double Cross in 1973.
Death of Vijay Anand
Vijay Anand died on 23rd February 2004, at the age of 70, due to a heart attack.
