Victor Banerjee is an Indian actor of Bengali descent who has worked in Hindi, Bengali and English language films of distinct fame. This actor is also seen on several TV Series on Indian television. He worked with prominent directors like Satyajit Ray, Jerry London, Shyam Benegal, Roman Polanski, James Ivory and David Lean. He is also involved in social causes and politics. Early Life of Victor Banerjee
Victor Banerjee was born on 15 October 1946 in Kolkata, India. He is a descendant of a leading intellectual Womesh Chandra Bonnerjee, a prominent man of his time and also the first President of the Indian National Congress (1885).Victor Banerjee had his secondary education in St. Edmunds`, Shillong and completed his graduation in English Literature from St. Xavier`s College, Kolkata. Earlier he worked in a multinational company for five years and later started his own travel agency business. He has also played in Senior Division Hockey League and Second Division Football League.
Film Career of Victor Banerjee
Victor Banerjee made his acting debut with the Bengali movie Dui Prithibi in the year 1970 under the direction of Piyush Bose. He debuted in Bollywood with the Satyajit Ray`s movie Satranj Ki Khiladi and soon shot to fame. He was highly applauded and awarded for his commendable performance in the Bengali movie Ghare Baire in 1984. In the same year Victor Banerjee acted as Dr. Aziz Ahmed in David Lean`s film, which was an adaptation of the book A Passage to India. The film rendered him international recognition for his phenomenal acting. Soon after, he was nominated for BAFTA award for this role (A Passage to India.) in 1986. He has also acted in the prestigious Merchant Ivory Productions Hullabaloo Over Georgie and Bonnie`s Pictures. One of the most appreciating works by Victor Banerjee outside India was the portrayal of the role of Jesus under the direction of Stephen Pimlott in the 1988 production of the York Mystery Plays.
For the past few years, Victor Banerjee has been venturing into Bollywood films while also being attached with the Bengali film industry partially. He is also seen playing character roles from time to time in the British cinema. He was also seen in the Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukherjee starrer Ta Ra Rum Pum (2007) and in Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan starrer Sarkar Raj (2008).
He even played a role in the movie Joggers Park opposite Perizaad Zorabian and received critical acclaim. Other Bollywood ventures of Victor Banerjee included My Brother...Nikhil, Home Delivery, Tahaan and others. The actor is also credited with working in British plays and directing a movie called August Requim in English and Agun in Bengali.

Victor Banerjee is deeply involved with human rights and labour issues of the film industry. He helped form the Screen Extras Union of India and campaigned for the rights of Garhwali farmers. While campaigning for the creation of Uttarakhand in a speech entitled `Uttarakhand: A People Denied`, he was credited for starting the movement that ultimately led to the making of the Uttarakhand Solidarity Network. Victor Banerjee is also a well-known name in Indian politics, and was once a parliamentary candidate for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from West Bengal.
Achievements of Victor Banerjee
Victor Banerjee got American Goldie Award for the documentary Where No Journey Ends. The actor also received National Award for his photography in `The splendours of Garowal and Rupkundu`. His role in Ghare Baire and Lathi gave him the Best Actor award by B.F.J.A. He won two other awards for this role in A Passage to India namely the NBR Award (National Board Review, USA) and the Evening Standard British Film Award.
