Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is located in Kancheepuram district of Tamil Nadu which is almost 85 kms away from Chennai located on the national highway 45, in the south of Chengalpattu. Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary attracts a large number of migratory birds from various parts of the world. Commonly the birds like pintail, garganey, grey wagtail, blue-winged teal, common sandpiper are found which migrate during the month of November and remain till February.

Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is one of oldest bird sanctuaries of India which has been favourite hunting spots for the local landlords. Because of a number of lakes this area attracts a large number of migratory birds during the season. The British government decided to develop this area as a bird sanctuary in 1789. Formally this was established in 1858 by the orders of the collector of Chingleput district. The best time to visit the sanctuary is during the month of November to March. This area includes a huge variety of flora and fauna. Among the flora Barringtonia acutangula, Acacia nilotica, Alangium salviflorum trees and dry evergreen scrub along with some thorn forests are commonly found. Monkeys and other common mammals are generally found in this region. This sanctuary includes a huge variety of bird like Garganey teals, glossy ibis, grey heron, grey pelican, open-billed stork, painted stork, snake bird, spoonbill, spot bill duck, cormorants, darter, grebes, large egret, little egrets, moorhen, night herons, paddy bird, painted stork, pintails, pond heron, sandpiper, shovellers, terns, and white ibis. The sanctuary is well maintained by both the government as well as the local villagers.
