Vedantam Satyam is a legendary female impersonator in Kuchipudi and Kalapam. He was born in a family of distinguished nattuvanars i.e. "performance gurus". He was trained from the age of 7 by his elder brother Vedantam Prahlada Sarma and also studied under Chinta Krishnamurthy.

By 20, Vedantam Satyam had cast a spell on spectators with amazing portrayals of women, becoming famous for his graceful and natural roles as Satyabhama and Usha. His large, lustrous eyes, mobile visage and frame created a hypnotic effect, and his sattvika abhinaya astounded cognoscenti. His contribution in reviving the tradition and keeping high standards was recognized all over India. This also helps establishing Kuchipudi as an Indian classical dance form. He was the first of its exponents to receive a Sangeet Natak Akademi award. Even at an advanced age his performances evoke wonder. He directed the Venkatarama Natya Mandali troupe and taught at the Shri Siddhendra Kalakshetram, both in Kuchipudi village, Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh. In present days he lives in Kuchipudi and continues to train young students.
