In ancient times, primarily two vastu types developed in India. The first was the Visvakalmilya paramparaor Vishvakarma School (Nagara) and the other was the Maya Parampara or school. A list of 20 temples in Nagara style is enumerated in Visvakarmaprakasa, Matsya Purana, Bhavishya Purana and samaranaga Sutendhara. Some of the puranas comprise a list of 45 temples, classed under nine subgroups while the Vishnudharmottara Purana mentions 101 temples.

Origin of Valabhi Temples
The famous Jetavana scene depicted on a medallion found at Bharhut has been significant in the context of evolution and early structural form of Valabhi temples. This scene consists of rectangular and circular huts that have inscribed levels, Gandha kuti and Kosamba Kuti respectively. According to Literary sources Lord Buddha resided in gandha Kuti. Since it has been the abode of Lord Buddha it became the pious structure for the Buddhists and thus became a symbol of worship. The Valabhi temples are also designed according to these structures.
