Upendra Nath Ashk, Indian theatre personalityUpendra Nath Ashk was born in the year 1910 in Jalandhar, Punjab He was conversant in both Hindi and Urdu. He started writing in Urdu at a young age but switched over to Hindi in 1937. He was also known as a popular playwright, he depicted the day-to-day problems of life in a simple and realistic manner. Jay parajay i.e. `Victory and Defeat` in 1937, Swarg ki jhalak i.e. `Glimpse of Heaven` in 1938, Chhatha beta i.e. `Sixth Son` in 1940, Quid i.e. `Imprisonment` in 1950, Udan i.e. `Flight` in 1950, Paintare i.e. `Moves` in 1952, Alag-alag raste i.e. `Different Paths` in 1954, Adarsh aur yathartha i.e. `Ideal and Real` in 1954, and Anjo-didi in 1955 are his full-length plays.

However, Upendra Nath Ashk seemed more fluent in one-act drama, many of them often staged by amateur Hindi theatre groups, and published in the collections Devataon ki chhaya men i.e. `Under the Shadows of the Gods` in 1939, Pakka gana i.e. `Classical Song` in 1944, Parda uthao parda girao i.e. `Raise the Curtain, Drop the Curtain` in 1951, Sahab ko jukam hai i.e. `Sahib`s Caught a Cold` in 1959, Taidie i.e. `Towels` in 1963, and Bebat ki bat i.e. `Talk of Non-issues` in 1963. Always surrounded by controversies, he even used to create them, yet he was the first Hindi dramatist to win a Sangeet Natak Akademi award, in 1965. This famous personality on Indian theatre died in the year of 1996.
