Upendra Nath Ashk was born in the year 1910 in Jalandhar, Punjab He was conversant in both Hindi and Urdu. He started writing in Urdu at a young age but switched over to Hindi in 1937. He was also known as a popular playwright, he depicted the day-to-day problems of life in a simple and realistic manner. Jay parajay i.e. `Victory and Defeat` in 1937, Swarg ki jhalak i.e. `Glimpse of Heaven` in 1938, Chhatha beta i.e. `Sixth Son` in 1940, Quid i.e. `Imprisonment` in 1950, Udan i.e. `Flight` in 1950, Paintare i.e. `Moves` in 1952, Alag-alag raste i.e. `Different Paths` in 1954, Adarsh aur yathartha i.e. `Ideal and Real` in 1954, and Anjo-didi in 1955 are his full-length plays.
However, Upendra Nath Ashk seemed more fluent in one-act drama, many of them often staged by amateur Hindi theatre groups, and published in the collections Devataon ki chhaya men i.e. `Under the Shadows of the Gods` in 1939, Pakka gana i.e. `Classical Song` in 1944, Parda uthao parda girao i.e. `Raise the Curtain, Drop the Curtain` in 1951, Sahab ko jukam hai i.e. `Sahib`s Caught a Cold` in 1959, Taidie i.e. `Towels` in 1963, and Bebat ki bat i.e. `Talk of Non-issues` in 1963. Always surrounded by controversies, he even used to create them, yet he was the first Hindi dramatist to win a Sangeet Natak Akademi award, in 1965. This famous personality on Indian theatre died in the year of 1996.
