Umlawan Cave of Meghalaya state is an exciting stop for adventure lovers. It is located in the Lumshnong village, near Jowai. The cave is regarded as the deepest as well as the longest in the entire sub continent with a surveyed length of 21.6 kms. The caves have existed here for centuries but it has become a famous tourist spot and has gained paramount importance relatively recently. During the season of monsoon, Umlawan Cave is mostly used by the villagers as a washing place. At this time, the entrance of the cave is flooded with water and one literally has to swim to get inside it.
There are two different caves connected to the Umlawan cave, namely Umskor and Kot Sati caves. The combined length of the caves covers some 21 kilometres and the depth goes to 100 metres. Within a distance of 60 kilometres, there are many other caves located towards the west direction that separate Umlawan cave and Jowai. These rocks have special formations of stalactites and stalagmites. Many of the caves are still unknown and have not yet been explored. Tourists from different places come here to have a view of the spectacular cave. Those who are planning to visit Umlawan Cave can book a private cab from Shillong.
