Umhang Lake is located in Meghalaya, a north eastern state of India. More specifically, this lake is situated in Batow Village in the Hills of the district of Jaintia. The people living in the village of Batow consider the Umhang Lake to be sanctified. Hence, they do not use it for other purposes. Annually they offer sacrifice on the banks of the lake. The Umhang Lake is known to have the resemblance of a gem in a perfect setting of a sylvan.
History of Umhang Lake
According to the history, the Umhang Lake was formed by the Chieftain U Sajar Nangli and his followers. They are also said to have created the Thadlaskein Lake. Once, the Cheiftain along with followers visited the place where the Umhang Lake is now situated. They all dined together on this spot. They found that the water of that small spring was wholesome and were very pleased with the place and the quality of water. They thus decided to stay back there and created the largest and brightest inland inside the kingdom of Jaintia. The Umhang Lake was thus created.

September to May is generally considered to be the best time to plan a tour to Umhang Lake. Since Umhang Lake is located in the state of Meghalaya, its transport system is of relevance to visit this lake. The nearest major airport to Meghalaya is the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (Assam), thus connecting Meghalaya to major cities of India like New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai by air. The nearest railhead to Meghalaya is in Guwahati (Assam). This railhead is well connected to the rest of the country. There are train services from Kolkata, New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Cochin and Trivandrum. By road, Meghalaya is also reachable from Assam at various points on the border by National Highway 40. The roads are good and well frequented with traffic. Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) has bus services coordinated with train arrivals at Guwahati.
