Ujjain has its origin from the ancient times. It is situated near the banks of Shipra River in Madhya Pradesh. It now falls in Ujjain District.

Location of Ujjain
Ujjain is an ancient city located in the Malwa Plateau Region. It is located on the eastern bank of the Shipra River in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is the administrative centre of Ujjain District and Ujjain Division.

History of Ujjain
Ujjain has its long history from mythological era. Ujjain became the temple city from the time of Iron Age. The people here were based on agriculture. After 5th Century BC, Ujjain emerged as a centre of administration and politics. Haihaya dynasty ruled Ujjain for many years and later, Ujjain came under the rule of Mauryan Empire, Satvahanas, Sungas, Western Satraps, Guptas and Paramaras. In medieval era, Ujjain came under the rule of Delhi Sultanate and later fell to Mughals. In 18th century, Ujjain came under Scindia and British Empire in India till independence.

According to the Population census in the year 2011, Ujjain has a population of 515,215. The total number of literates in Ujjain was 385,193. Out of which 210,075 were males and 175,118 were females. The average literacy rate is 84.43 percent.

Ujjain is administered by Ujjain Municipal Corporation. Ujjain Development Authority was established to develop the urban areas of Ujjain.

Ujjain is developed with many schools, colleges and universities. Here the vocational courses are offered to the students for the overseas companies. Avantika University, Maharshi Panini Sanskrit University, Vikram University, Ruxmaniben Deepchand Gardi Medical College, Christu Jyoti Convent Senior Secondary School, Saraswati Vidhya Mandir and Ujjain Public School are the popular educational institutions here.

The economy here is completely associated with knowledge based industries and the small scale industries and it is well linked with Mumbai, Ranchi and Kolkata for commercial purposes.

Ujjain is well connected with regular buses from all cities of Madhya Pradesh. Ujjian is also connected with Ujjain Junction (railways) and Indore Airport(airways), which is 55 km from Ujjain.
