Tennis enjoys a considerable following in India. But the tennis in India is limited to urban areas but still it is counted among the most popular sports in India. India has produced a number of tennis players, who have earned global appreciation and have made their presence in some of the top tennis tournaments and Grand Slams. There are many types of tennis in India. It is broadly classified into eight categories.
Lawn Tennis in India
Lawn Tennis is a game that can be played either indoor or outdoor on a rectangular court by individuals (in singles) or by four persons of women`s and men`s double or by men and women parties (mixed doubles).
Mini Tennis
Mini Tennis is another version of tennis and it is popular among the school and college students. Mini tennis is designed for children or younger and for the inexperienced players. By this game one can learn all the skills and methods of the actual game with fun and excitement.
Real Tennis in India
Real Tennis is one of several games sometimes called the sport of kings. It is the original racquet sport from which the modern game of lawn tennis is derived.
Soft Tennis in India
Soft tennis is a racquet game played on a court of two halves, separated by a net. Like regular tennis in India, it is played by individuals (singles) or pairs (doubles), whose object is to hit the ball over the net, landing within the confines of the court, with the aim of preventing one`s opponent from being able to hit it back. Soft tennis differs from regular tennis in that it uses soft rubber balls instead of hard yellow balls.
Wheelchair Tennis in India
Wheelchair tennis is one of the forms of tennis adapted for those who have disabilities in their lower bodies. The size of courts, balls, and rackets are the same, but there are two major differences from pedestrian tennis; athletes use specially designed wheelchairs and the ball may bounce up to two times.
Tennikoit
Tennikoit is also called ring tennis or "tenniquoits". It is game played on a tennis-style court, with a circular rubber ring hurled over a net separating the two players, with each endeavoring to catch and return the hurled ring into the opponent`s court.
Team Tennis
Team tennis refers to tennis tournaments which consist of matches between different groups of players each competing to win the tournament for their team.
Paddle Tennis
Paddle Tennis is a game popular among the school students in India. This paddle tennis is adapted from tennis. Compared to tennis, the court is smaller and has no doubles lanes, and the net is lower. Paddle tennis is played with a solid paddle as opposed to a strung racquet, and a depressurized tennis ball is used along with an underhand serve. The same court is used for both singles and doubles, with doubles being the dominant form of play.
