Tulsi Chakraborty was a genius comic actor in Bengali cinema during the 1940s and 1950s. His most notable role is perhaps the lead role in Parash Pathar, directed by Satyajit Ray. Tulsi Chakraborty was best known for his realistic acting that never seemed as an act. He never used any make-up or extra arrangements. Tulsi Chakraborty was usually seen in a white dhoti accompanied by a sacred thread on his shoulder. One of Chakraborty`s distinguished performances was in the film Sharey Chuattar, which was the debut film of the popular pair of Bengali Cinema duo Suchitra Sen and Uttam Kumar.
Tulsi Chakraborty spent the latter part of his life in extreme poverty. His widow also lived a life of poverty as was revealed by a television programme. Due to his poverty he often walked from Tollygunj studio to his home in Shibpur, Howrah District.
