Tribes of Punjab
Tribes of Punjab are scattered throughout the state. Amongst them the prominent ones are Jats, Khatris, Aroras, Sainis, Kambohs and Sansis.

Tribes of PunjabTribes of Punjab are considered as the descendents of the different racial stocks that entered the region in the past. Thus, it can be said that the population of this state comprises a mixed and heterogeneous race. This land is considered as the meeting ground of various races and people. In the past, the Greeks, Scythians, Turks, Huns, Mongols and Afghans made consecutive invasions into Punjab. Later on, some of them also settled here permanently and adopted the indigenous traditions and customs of this land. With the passage of time, they merged with the local population and their cultural traits became an integral part of the diverse culture of this state.

The major tribal communities of Punjab include Sikh Jats, Khatris, Aroras, Sainis, Kambojs and Sansis.

Sikh Jats Tribe of Punjab: The Sikh Jats form a bulk of the total population of the state. They mainly belong to the agricultural class. Sikh Jats are considered as highly industrious by nature. Jats of Punjab are divided into different clans. The significant clans of Jats in the Malwa region are Sindhus and Sindhu Brars. The major Jat clans of Majha region are Dhillon, Chahil, Randhawa and Sindhu.

Khatri and Arora Tribes of Punjab: Next to them are the Khatris and Aroras. Trade is the main occupation of the Khatris. Regarding their origin the Khatris claim to be in direct line of Kshatriyas of Aryan race. Further, the Aroras also claim to be of Khatri origin. Khatris and Aroras are the most prominent non-agriculturist tribes of the state of Punjab. Majority of them are engaged in business and commerce. Khatris are further divided into several groups.

Saini and Kamboj Tribes of Punjab: Sainis and Kambojs are among the prominent minor agricultural tribes of Punjab. They are cultivators and highly industrious. Sainis claim their origin from Rajputs and Kambohs claim their origin from "Kamboj Desh" in Afghanistan.

Sansi Tribe of Punjab: The Sansis are nomadic tribes and they hardly reside in one place for a long time. The peoples of Sansi Tribes are originally descended from Rajput origin and migrated from Mewar to different parts of the country in the 16th century and acquired nomadic character.
