Tribes of GoaTribes of Goa form an integral part of the rich cultural heritage of the state. Tribal communities of Goa have managed to retain their ancient and indigenous ways of life and traditional practices, customs and way of living. The chief tribes of this smallest state of India are Gowdas tribe, Kunbi tribe, Velips tribe and Dhangars. Like some other states of India, Goa too was invaded by the Aryans. Some of the tribes of Goa are considered as the original settlers of Konkan region much before the invasion of the Dravidians. There are no concrete records regarding the origin or how they have migrated to Goa. The tribes of Goa differ from one another in terms of dress pattern, rituals and customs.

Gowdas Tribe of Goa: Gowdas tribe is the largest tribal group inhabiting the interior villages of this state. In their society, women enjoy a high status and rights. Further, they also play a prominent role in the economic matters. The major tribal communities of Goa live in isolated villages. Their indigenous lifestyles, traditions, ceremonies, customs, religious beliefs, practices and superstitions form a significant part of the culture of the state.

Kunbi Tribe of Goa: The Kunbis are said to be one of the original tribes in Goa. They are generally known to be very mild mannered and natured people who work hard to make a living. Kunbis used to follow Hindu religion but were later converted to Christianity by the Portuguese. The Kunbi folk dance is quite famous in Goa. The Kunbis mainly reside in the Salcete taluka of Goa.

Velips Tribe of Goa: This tribe is very scanty in number making around few thousands. Velips are also original inhabitants of Goa. The members of this tribe are mostly found in the remote rural areas within the forests. Their dwellings are found in forest fringed areas of Canacona, Sanguem and Quepem, which are sub-districts of south Goa.

Dhangars Tribe of Goa: The members of this tribe are purely shepherd and they have emerged from the lands of Gujarat. The ancestral lineage of this tribe is marked by the turban and Kathiawadi-styled white dress they put on during this performance.
