Tourism in Rameswaram Island or Pamban Island is an island tourism centre in India offering wide range of tourism sites for both nature lovers and the pilgrims. Pamban Island is covered mostly with white sand and hence is not suitable for cultivation. The coconut trees and palm trees are found in abundance apart from fig and eucalyptus plants. The shrubs and rushes are found in abundance all along the sea-shore.
Pamban Island also known as Rameswaram Island is an island located between peninsular India and Sri Lanka. The island is a part of India and forms the Rameswaram taluk of the Ramanathapuram district of the state of Tamil Nadu. The principal town in the island is the pilgrimage centre of Rameswaram.
Pamban Island or Rameswaram Island is situated between 9 degree and 11 minutes North and 9 degree and 19 minutes North latitude and 79 degree and 12 minutes east to 79 degree and 23 East longitudes.
The length of Rameswaram Island and Pamban Island varies from two kilometres at the Dhanushkodi promontory to seven kilometres near Rameswaram. The area of the island is around 67 square km.
Pamban Bridge
Pamban Bridge is a beam viaduct on the Palk Strait which connects the town of Rameswaram on Pamban Island to mainland India. The bridge refers to both the road bridge and the cantilever railway bridge, though primarily it means the latter. It was opened in the year1914. It was first Sea Bridge in India, and was the longest sea bridge in India till 2010. Pamban Bridge is for the most part, a conventional bridge resting on concrete piers, but has a double leaf bascule section midway, which can be raised to let ships and barges pass through.
Rameswaram
Rameswaram is a municipality town in the Ramanathapuram district in Tamil Nadu. It is located on Pamban Island separated from mainland India by the Pamban channel and is about 50 kilometres from Mannar Island, which is located in Sri Lanka. Pamban Island is easily accessible through Rameswaram. People visiting to Rameswaram can easily visit the Pamban Island.
Ramanathaswamy Temple
Ramanathaswamy Temple is the most noteworthy significant attraction of the town of Rameshwaram Island or Pamban Island. It is located in the centre of town. Ramanathaswamy Temple is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Ramanathaswamy Temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines, where Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of a Jyotirlinga meaning “pillar of lightâ€.
Dhanushkodi
Dhanushkodi is the ghostly town, located in the southernmost tip of the Pamban Island and houses the Kothandaramaswamy Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Rama. Dhanushkodi was washed away during the 1964 cyclone. But the temple alone remained intact. It is 18 km way from the centre of the town and can be reached by road.
