Tirukkadaimudi Temple of Tamil Nadu is also called "Sadaiyar Koyil". The temple is situated near the banks of River Cauvery. In this temple Lord Shiva is worshipped as "Kadaimudinathar" or "Lord Kiluvai" as he appeared under the Kiluvai Tree. The looping of the River Cauvery, in an almost westward flow is considered to be of significance here.
Structure of Tirukkadaimudi Temple
The presiding deity "Kadaimudinathar" or "Anthi Samrakshaneeswarar" is housed in a west facing shrine. There are also shrines here for Nataraja, Bhairava and the Tevaram trinity. Shiva Linga has 16 stripes known as "Shotasa Linga". Wealth is classified under 16 heads; hence it is believed that those worshipping Kadaimudinathar will achieve all the wealth.
The Ambal shrine is dedicated to "Abhiramavalli". The shrine is facing towards south with an entrance. Woman awaiting marriage use to tie a Mangalsutra to the Goddess for early wedding. When marriage proposals conclude happily, they take back the Mangalsutra, tie it on their neck, worship and again leave it with Mother. Their belief is that doing so would ensure the longevity of their Mangalsutra till the end of their life.
Historical Evidence of Tirukkadaimudi Temple
Inscriptions in this west facing temple from Vikrama Chola"s period refer to the deity here as "Tiruchchadaimudi udaiya Mahadevar". Inscriptions from Nandivarma Pallava III period and those from Parantaka I are also found here. An image of "Ardhanareeswarar" was discovered near the temple which is now preserved in the Chennai Government Museum. According to the historians, the stone structure was erected during the days of Aditya Chola I.
Legend of Tirukkadaimudi Temple
Lord Brahma incurred the curse of Lord Shiva due to his pride. For relief, he performed Shiva Puja in many places including this place. Lord Shiva granted to appear in front of Brahma under the Kiluvai tree. When Brahma sought pardon and relief, Lord told him that the relief would come to Brahma at an appropriate time. As requested by Brahma, Lord Shiva stayed in this place. Sage Kanva also worshipped Shiva in this place and attained salvation.
Festivals at Tirukkadaimudi Temple
"Arudra Darisanam" and "Kartikai Deepam" are the main festivals that are celebrated here. Four worship services are offered each day.
