Tiru Maakaral temple is the 7th of the 32 Tevara Stalams in the Tondai region of South India.
Legends: Shiva manifested himself as a giant golden lizard for Rajendra Cholan here. An Udumbu (giant lizard) worshipped Shiva in an anthill. Indra also worshipped Shiva here.
Temple: A gajaprashta Vimanam crowns the sanctum. The present structure is attributed to the period of Kulottunga Chola II. Recent renovation has resulted in the temple losing its older features.
Festivals: The annual festival is held in the month of Pisces in the month of Aquarius.
