According to the population census of 2001, Thuraiyur had a population of 31,005 comprising 15,530 males and 15,475 females, making the sex ratio of the town to 996. Thuraiyur had an average literacy of 81.42%, which is higher than the national average of 59.5%. There are total of 7,535 households in the town. Thuraiyur had a total of 10,011 main workers out of which 161 cultivators, 1,018 agricultural labourers, 510 in house hold industries and 8,322 other workers. There were a total of 949 marginal workers: 5 marginal cultivators, 475 marginal agricultural labourers, 76 marginal workers in household industries and 393 other marginal workers.

Tourism in Thuraiyur
Thuraiyur is famous for the Prasanna Venkatasalapathi Temple, which was contructed in Chola times at about 1800 years ago. This temple is situated on the Thuraiyur-Perambalur road. Prasanna Venkatasalapathi temple lies at the top of Perumalmalai that lies 960 feet above ground level in Pachamalai hills, which is 3 km from Thuraiyur in Tiruchirappalli district. Prasanna Venkatasalapathi Temple is said to be constructed by the grandson of Karikala Chola, one of the prominent king of Chola Dynasty which was flourished in the pre Islamic period. The later Chola kings named as Karuppannar and Veeraswamy are worshiped in the temple. Thousands of devotees take part in the local rural festival named "Girivalam procession" around the Perumalmalai hillock on all full-moon days. In Tamil month "Puratassi" Saturday is very famous where lot of devotees from different places come to worship Lord Perumal. The temple contains Sabthasvara Thoongal, which can produce rhythmic sounds and "yali" a lion are best example for medieval stone works. There is another 400-year old Lord Vishnu temple behind the Pulian Cholai.

Thuraiyur in Tiruchirappalli district is well connected by road to Trichy, Namakkal, Perambalur, Coimbatore, Ooty, Chennai, Karur , Attur and Salem. Thuraiyur is also well connected to neighbouring villages by mini buses. The nearest railway station and airport is located in Trichy.
