Thiruparappu waterfall is located in Kanyakumari District in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is almost 42 km from Nagercoil, the headquarters of Kanyakumari District and 55 kms from Thiruvananthapuram. Thiruparappu waterfall is 300 feet long. Thiruparappu waterfall is also called as "Kumari Kuttalam". The nearest Panchayat town Kulasekaram is situated at a distance of 5 km. It is located in Kodayar River. The water descends at Thiruparappu and has a rocky riverbed. Thiruparappu waterfall cascades down from a height of about 50 feet. For about 7 months in a year the water can be seen flowing down. The rest of the months it remains dry. The falls lies close to Kulasekara village.
Temple near Thiruparappu Waterfall
A temple named "Mahadever Kovil" has been constructed on the left side of the river. The temple is well fortified and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple faces the west direction. Among the 12 Sivalayas, the Shiva temple located here is the third one. The lord here is said to be in the form of "Virabhadra Murti" which is a fierce form of Lord Shiva. Later he took up his abode here. Several old inscriptions can be seen here including the one of the Pandya King of the 9th century. The temple has been built in the 9th Century A.D. and resembles the Kerala Architecture style. The sanctum is round shaped at the bottom and cone shaped toward at the peak. It is about 13 km from Pechiparai Dam. Another temple has been built close to the Lord Shiva temple. The temple dates back to the age of Rajaraja Chola I.
Thiruparappu Dam
The Thiruparappu dam above the falls is built on a rocky bed that stretches across a wide area of about quarter of a kilometre upstream. Here the famous Thiruparappu weir has been built to supply water to the paddy fields. The water is used for irrigation purpose.
Tourists visiting the sight can enjoy bathing under the gushing water. They can even stroll around in the area to have a glimpse of different perspectives of the fall. A swimming pool has been built by the District Administration for children. This place is thus quite popular among the children.
