The Sadhu is an Indian comics series, published and distributed in India and abroad by Liquid Comics, which was formerly known as Virgin Comics. The Sadhu comics series is included in the Shakti line of comics published by Liquid Comics. It was created and conceptualized by Gotham Chopra and artist Jeevan Kang. The story of The Sadhu is based on the character of a British soldier named James Jensen who comes to India during the British rule in India. He eventually discovers that he is the reincarnation of a great sage from the ancient era. The plot mainly deals with the various lessons that James Jensen has to be taught in order to eliminate all connections with his present life.
After the family of Jenson is cruelly murdered by a corrupt senior British officer, he seeks shelter with the Sadhus or sages who are Indian mystics. After years of being trained in various arts and possessing supernatural powers, James Jensen finds himself in a dilemma as whether to use his new found powers to avenge the murder of his family or to seek enlightenment.
Content of The Sadhu
The story of The Sadhu is based during the period of pre-independent India when the British Empire ruled over the country. Dada Thakur, a sadhu, along with a group of rebels known as Dakaits, fight against the British. In England, an unemployed young man named James finds an opportunity to join the Imperial army in India. Another pivotal character is introduced who is named Timothy Townsend, a brutal colonel who works for the British East India Company in the Bengal province. After James comes to India he accidentally discovers a temple of Goddess Kali and experiences spiritual epiphany. Later his wife gives birth to a baby boy named Jack. Colonel Townsend believes that James is not fitted to be a British soldier and is displeased with him.
During the course of the story, Colonel Townsend sexually assaults his wife and murders her and his son and later buries him alive. James eventually escapes the military facility and escapes to the forest where he meets with Dada Thakur and his men. James Jensen is then trained in the mystic arts by Dada Thakur. He learns how to attain enhanced speed, phasing, advanced fighting capability, time manipulation and even absolute concentration. As his rage increases and his desire to avenge the death of his family grow beyond his control, James ends his training suddenly after three years.
Later in the story, James meets with his brother William in an inn. James starts looking for a Demon Sadhu and discovers that the person is Colonel Townsend. James eventually challenges Townsend and is beaten easily due to his shortage of experience. He is later rescued by an English university professor informs that Townsend worshiped the negative side of goddess Kali and became the demon Sadhu. James finds out that Townsend has set up a base in the London underworld. Later James escapes an assassination attempt and continues in his quest to avenge the death of his family.
The tale of The Sadhu comics series continues with two more sequels, both 5 issue miniseries, The Silent Ones and The Wheel of Destiny.
