The chief port city of the state of Karnataka, Mangalore is known for its beaches, temples and industries. Named after the local Hindu deity Mangaladevi, Mangalore had been the capital of Alupa dynasty till 14th century.

Having such a historical background, the city of Mangalore possesses the Mahatma Gandhi Museum with an intention to store the objects of the ancient past of Mangalore and the allied areas. This museum is an educational type of museum established long ago in the year 1930. Today, it exhibits items like skeleton, skull, paintings, stone, crafts and archaeological objects.

The museum welcomes its visitors to visit from 9:30am to 12:30pm and 2pm to 5:30pm. It remains closed on Sundays and other holidays.
