The Jat Jatin dance is a popular folk dance from the Indian state of Bihar. It is performed mainly in the northern Bihar in Koshi and Mithila regions. The dance is performed at midnight by the housewives and young grown-up women of the house.

Jat Jatin is the dance of women and is supposed to be performed on moonlit nights during the monsoons. Grown-up girls and young housewives gather in the courtyard and, accompanied by a drum, dance from midnight to sunrise. Usually, it is performed in a couple.

The original theme of the Jat-Jatin dance of Bihar explains the story of the lovers Jat and Jatin, who were separated and living in difficult situations. But now through "Jat Jatin" many social situations are also discussed like natural calamities such as droughts and floods.

Jat-Jatin Dance, Bihar, Indian Folk Dances Through this dance, various other socially concerned topics like poverty, sorrow, love, arguments between lovers or husband and wife are also enacted. In some versions, the performers wear masks to add a real picture.

Performance of Jat- Jatin Dance
Jat- Jatin dance is not complicated; it comprises of delicate bodily movements. The steps are lively and vigorous with four steps forward and an equal number back. The rhythm is kept to six, seven or eight beats that are Dadra, Teevta and Kerwa. Foot patterns are not very intricate but the movements of the limbs are graceful.
