District Science Centre at Tirunelveli District in the state of Tamil Nadu in India is a unit of the National Council of Science Museums, Government of India. It is a unique institution of its kind which is located on the banks of Tamiraprani. The major objectives of the District Science Centre at Tirunelveli are to popularize science, inculcate the spirit of enquiry, foster creative talents and infuse scientific temper in life. It is also one of the one hundred and twenty four centres in the country located in the state of Tamil Nadu. This centre possesses three permanent galleries on ocean, a semi permanent gallery on popular science and six acres of Science Park where a number of exhibits help create awareness of scientific development among the general people.
There is a healthy collection of films and video cassettes on nature, wildlife, computers, etc., which give a face lift to the District Science Centre at Tirunelveli district in the Tamil Nadu state. This science centre organizes video and planetarium shows; a planetarium shows the night sky during day time. The District Science Centre, Tirunelveli provides a heart-beat demonstration at the animatorium, has a sky observatory to view heavenly bodies through telescope and science demonstration and lectures on everything starting from electronics to salts. Kits are also sent to schools in order to provide effective classroom communication.
This autonomous body in the district of Tirunelveli is a unit of the National Council of Science Museums, attached to the Department (HRD) Government of India. Apart from the various facilities which are there to avail in this Science centre, it also organizes programs like Planetarium, Mobile Science Exhibition, Film Show, Science Drama, Temporary Exhibitions and Science Fair.
