The Asura Analogues is an Indian comics series, published and distributed in India and abroad by Liquid Comics, which was originally known as Virgin Comics. The project is spearheaded by Medical Doctor and author Deepak Chopra. The comics book series titled The Asura Analogues recounts the various tales related to the Asuras or demons mentioned in eastern Hindu mythology and Buddhist mythology. The series represents various fictional and imaginative horror stories of the Asuras illustrated in graphical details. The Asura Analogues by Liquid Comics have gained much appreciation from readers and critics alike for its story telling, illustrations and paneling and layout structures.
The Asura Analogues by Liquid Comics includes three stand alone comic book stories, namely, Virulents, Eat the Dead and The Leaves, which deal with different mythological tales related with the Asuras. The three stand alone stories are discussed below-
Virulents
Virulents is the initial issue in The Asura Analogues series which was created by comics writer Shamik Dasgupta and illustrated by artist Dean Ruben Hyrapiet. The story revolves around a team of Indian and American soldiers on a search and rescue mission in Afghanistan, who eventually discover an ancient Indian legend about a demon.
A special troop of Indian and American soldiers are deployed in Afghanistan, who are apparently searching for a lost detachment. Both teams keep deadly secrets from the other while they head on to a encounter a collision that has even worse ramifications.
In the year 2001, American soldiers wander off to the Hindu Kush Mountains in a search and rescue mission in order to locate their missing comrades. Eventually they meet up with a platoon of Indian soldiers, who are looking for a group of terrorists. The troop of Indian soldiers suspects that the terrorists are hiding a dreadful weapon. Both groups of American and Indian soldiers confront each other initially and are harsh, but during the course of the plot the two teams experience something which they must unite against in order to survive. The soldiers eventually realize that the terrorist group actually is a modern version of an ancient Indian demon who have transformed into invincible vampires. The story is based on the Indian legend of the Asura Rakthbeej or Raktavija, a demonic creature who had a boon that every time a drop of his blood fell on the ground, he would replicate himself and a duplicate Raktavija will be born at that spot. Each drop of blood is a seed for the demon.
The comics also portray various themes of racial conflicts, cultural animosities and mutual dependence between the awkwardly associated Hindu, Sikh, Muslim and Christian protagonists. Virulents was widely released in India, America and United Kingdom.
Eat the Dead
Eat the Dead is the second stand-alone comic book in The Asura Analogues series by Liquid Comics. The story was written and graphically illustrated by Siddharth Kotain.
The plot of Eat the Dead revolves around a group of teenagers who visit a haunted temple located in rural India and eventually face their own karmic ghosts. The five strangers are plagued by nightmares in their journey to a legendary temple hidden in a strange forest and rooted in bloody myth. The gang of five teenagers discovers that their past and present selves are entwined with a hellish creature that resides in the forest. These creatures in human forms are known as Aghori to the outside world. The group land up in not only just a haunted temple but confront the ghosts of their own karmic past and get trapped in a cycle of hostility and fatality pursued by an inexplicable evil. The only way to escape the Karmic cycle is by joining forces so that they don`t become victim of the demonic power that feeds the dark and mystical Aghoris.
The Leaves
The Leaves is the third part of the stand-alone story arc in the The Asura Analogues series. The thrilling story is graphically illustrated by artist Ashwin Chikerur. The story of The Leaves follows a doctor who goes to India and is recognized as a being of evil forces by a soothsayer. The plot of The Leaves is based on the Naadi fortune-tellers in India. Max Mellick, a highly reputed heart surgeon, lives a very happy and extravagant with in stunning girlfriend in New York. But after a sudden incident, he is forced to visit the funeral of a friend in the mystical land of India. He is told by a psychic that Max will bring about the end of the world and that he is an agent of apocalypse. This gives rise to situations and consequences that will change his life forever. Branded as an agent of evil, the doctor goes on a run in order to save his life and in a desperate search for answers.
